The Simple Present We use the simple present in the following cases In this case,we use frequency adverbs like: always-sometimes-never-usually-often-everyday-every week-every month-every year-……. examples .I always revise my lessons .She cleans the rooms everyday *The verbs: "revise" and "clean" are conjugated in the simple present because it's a frequent action or a repeated action Scientific Facts .In scientific facts that do not change,we conjugate the verb in the simple present examples .The earth turns round the sun We conjugate the verb "turn" in the simple present because the earth always turns round the sun: it turned round the sun in the past;it is turning now an dit will turn in the future.This fact never changes that's why the ver bis conjugated in the simple present Water boils at 100 dgrees.c .Water always boils when it reaches this temperature Fixed arrangements .When some actions are fixed by shedules or appointments examples .The plane from Algiers to Paris flies at 9:00 We have a meeting on Monday.( every Monday ) General facts about someone or something .When we mention specific information about somebody or something examples .Ahmed is a tall boy .The tree is a plant How to conjugate a verb in the simple present I) verb to be I am-you are-we are-they are-he is-she is-it is II) verb to have I have-you have-we have-they have-he has-she has- it has III) other verbs I / you / we / they +stem Stem is the verb in the infinitive form without to .Example: the stem of "to come" is "come" and the stem of "to read" is "read" Example .I ( to drink ) coffee everyday .I drink coffee everyday-We always ( to pray ) in the mosque .We always pray in the mosque He / she / it + stem+es when the stem (verb ) ends in ch-sh-s-z-x-o Examples -He never ( to watch ) cartoons He never watches cartoons -She always ( to go ) to school late She always goes to school late He / she / it + ies when the stem ( verb ) ends in "y" after a consonant Example .My brother sometimes ( to study ) English alone .My brother sometimes studies English alone *When the"y" is preceded by a vowel,we gust add "s" Example He often ( to play ) football on weekends He often plays football on weekends He / she / it +s when the stem ( verb ) ends in one of the rest of letters Example -It often ( to snow ) in Aflou in winter It often snows in Aflou in winter Activity Give the right form of the verbs in brakets .I usually (to go ) to school on foot .My mother never ( to have ) lunch alone-She sometimes ( to eat ) oranges .We ( to watch ) movies everyday He ( to do ) his activities every night The pupils never ( to ask ) questions.The always ( to say) yes whenever they ( to be ) asked if they have understood .She always ( to mix ) everything I hope you have taken profit from this lesson See you next lesson Dear pupils,we are going today to deal with the second lesson after we had seen in the first lesson when to use the simple present and how to conjugate a verb in the simple present. Today,we are going to learn where to put the frequency adverbs,the pronunciation of the final "s"and some activities to practise both rules -There are two groups of the frequency adverbs group number one in which we find always-sometimes-never-usually-often group number two in which we find everyday-every week-every month-every year-every+a word indicating time the adverbs of the first group should be put -after the verb to beexample I am always happy -between the subject and the verb example She never visits her aunt -after "not"in the negative form examples -He is not always in his office -I do not often go to the cinema -after the subject in questions examples -Do you always travel? -Where do you often go? The adverbs of the second group should be placed either at the beginning or at the end of the sentence or at the end examples -Everyday,I practise sport -I practise sport everyday Activity:rewrite the following sentences putting the frequency adverb in the right place -I speak English at home****never -My fathet is busy****always -She watches movies****sometimes -I drink two cups of coffee*****everyday -He does not come****often -Do you pray in the mosque?****often Now,we move to the second point of today's lesson which is the pronunciation of the final "s"in the verb and the same rules applies for the regular plural S is pronounced / s/ or /z / or /iz / it is according to the final letter of the verb It is pronounced /s/after f-k-p-t example looks-stops It is pronounced /iz/after ch-sh-s-z-x and ce example watches-finishes It is pronounced /z/after the rest of letters example reads-calls Activity: How is the final S pronounced in each of the following verbs? takes-feels-dances-lets-drinks-fixes-seems-lives-passes-hopes I hope that you have well understood the lesson and if you have any question,just put it here.You will have an answer,soon Thanks |
